Where the HAMS eat…

Wow.. I’m full of submissions today….

I was out and about the other day, and saw a restaurant I’d seen a million times. For some reason, it then decided to click in my head that it might be funny. So I got the trusty camera, and got a few photos.

This restaurant is in Georgetown, Ontario (one town west of my hometown of Brampton). Apparantly they have a pretty decent breakfast, but I can’t say I’ve ever eaten there. I’ll have to remedy that the next time I’m in Georgetown and the urge to eat something comes across me.

And obviously, the name has nothing to do with Ham Radio – it refers to the “other” meaning of the word.

For those who think that Extras are ‘better’ operators…

We present to you Anthony AE2NY (formerly W8ANT…. yes – the same guy who told an Air Force C-130 to go pound sand when they tried to check into a SATERN emergency net during Hurricane Katrina), proving that the license an amateur does not make.

Click here to see probably one of the dumbest questions I’ve ever seen posted to QRZ.COM. Keep in mind that this was not posted by some raw fresh-from-the-exam newbie, this was posted by a 2×2 EXTRA, who used the fact he held the EXTRA license class asa way of looking down his nose at people during the whole debacle on QRZ when he bragged about telling off the USAF crew who tried to check into his net.

It would seem that his total ignorance of emergency ham radio rules also extends to radio theory as well, since I’m sure ANYONE with at the very least a rudimentary knowledge of radio knows that you cna’t use a DTH satellite dish to talk on HF…!! I’m no Extra… in fact, I hold the LOWEST possible license classification that Industry Canada provides…. and this was a no brainer to me. “Sure”, you say… “But Bryan works in TV… he not only knows what frequency range DTH satellites transmit at, he probably knows the exact frequency and transponder # of DishNet”. But… COME ON now… this is basic antenna theory here!!

Feel free to cisit the thread and post your two cents before the thread gets locked. The funniest part is how he brags that he is a “FEMA CERT Trainer”. I can only thank GOD I don’t live anywhere where FEMA has to rescue me, if this dolt is the kind of people they’ve got working for them. No wonder the response to Katrina was such a mess……..

Construction Light

We got this e-mail and great photo from Don KC8BQR:

I figured this was one worthy of sending it to the crew there.

The Cleveland HamFest and Computer Show (more like boat anchor show) was this past Sunday. I was leaving when I saw this gem sitting in the parking lot. Upon somewhat closer (and not so noticeable) inspection, that sure looks like construction paper in the domes of the lightbar.

Can anyone enlighten me as to WHY? (insert insane laughter here). Does this make it brighter, or keep the bugs from swarming around the intense beams of light protruding from the Federal Signal Jetsonic lightbar…you decide.

Whacker gets busted in Toronto

This message comes to us via Justin VE3UDP in Toronto, Canada:

Heard on the airwaves of 52 Division in Toronto, the busiest division on Toronto, story is broken only on this site!

A 24 year old man, identified himself as a “Canadian Federal Agent” to a parking attendant at a local lot located at Festival Hall in downtown Toronto, it seems his Credit Card was declining in the exit gate. He stepped out of his White Crown Victoria (which had the CVPI badge on the back) and identified himself as a federal agent and that he should be let out for free immediatly. The attendant, stalled, and contacted Toronto Police Service who arrived to find that the man was impersonating an officer, was carrying a fake badge and had a scanner in the centre console. He was arrested and taken to 52 division where he was charged with impersonating a police officer and fraud for attempting to use a cancelled credit card.
