What a mess….

ShitvanAn anonymous fan of Hamsexy submitted this gem:

Here is a photo of a CAP Vehicle in Salem, Oregon.  I Think it fits your style!  WTF mike do you grab if you hear something?

I left this image in it’s original size (click on the thumbnail to see the full, 200k version) because there are many nuances that make this image great:

a) Why not finish the wood of the obviously home-made console? Even a little Linseed oil or even a few coats of Varathane will spruce up that plywood.

b) The blatantly illegal FRS set-up – come on, even Hams should know better

c) The base of the console that looks like it was stolen from the set of St. Elsewhere

d) The Holy Card on the wall (If any Hamsexy Catholics can ID the card, please let us know)

e) The absolutely ANCIENT commercial rigs (obviously set up to transmit) they have Gabeon public safety rigs, when a lawnchair, a cooler, a Yaesu portable and a Uniden scanner would serve nicely.

f) The huge tangle of microphone cords going every which way, seemingly into light sockets, speakers, thin air, etc.

Speaking of Cathoclism, just in case anyone was wondering, Gabriel the Archangel is the Patron Saint of Amateur Radio. Being God’s messenger throughout the Bible, and the sounder of the trumpet on Judgement Day, it’s an obvious choice. St. Gabe is also the Patron Saint of stamp collectors, broadcasters, Portugal, Argentinean ambassadors and postal workers. So now you know. I shall say a prayer to Gabriel tonight for my hobby.

Toronto Meet-up is on!

The Toronto Meet-up is on!

The first ever general Toronto Hamsexy meet-up will happen on December 6th at 8pm. We don’t know exactly where it will take place, but it’ll be somewhere in or around the Toronto area. Visit this thread on the Hamsexy forums to keep updated on the details. It looks like the opinion is leaning towards a strip club, but we’ll see. We’ve got Hamsexy friends coming from all points coming for the event, including a few from the USA.

Any and all fans of Hamsexy are welcome. Please RSVP on the event thread if you want to make it.

As well, the details for the Dallas Texas and South Carolina meets are well under way. As soon as the details are set, I’ll be posting them here.

Hamsexy meetups

There are currently two Hamsexy meetups that are being organized.

The first is the Hamsexy Toronto meet-up, tenativley slated for Tuesday December 6th at an as-of-yet unknown locale in downtown Toronto (we’re split on either an eatery or a strip club). If you’re interested in showing up, the details can be found here: http://forums.hamsexy.com/viewtopic.php?t=3454. We’ve got several people from the Toronto area showing up, including some guests from the USA who are making the short trip north to visit us. This will be my last chance to greet everyone from Hamsexy, as I’m moving to Asia in early January.

The second is the Hamsexy Dallas meet-up, slated for some time in early to mid December. If you’re in the Lone Star State and want to show up, details can be foud on the Hamsexy Forums at this thread: http://forums.hamsexy.com/viewtopic.php?t=3456.

Hope to see you at either of these two events!!

Hamsexy VOIP Net tonight!!

It’s the Wednesday night friendly… the weekly Hamsexy VOIP Net. And it’s tonight!! 0200 zulu (9pm EST, 6pm PST)

IRLP: Node 9008
Echolink: *VAN-IRLP* (remember the asterisks!!)

Tonight’s special guest will be my sister Karyn, who will, in the womanly wisdom of her 25 years, will dispense advice, suggestions and insults to all those on the net. Her two brief cameos on the net over the past month and a bit was met with rave reviews, so I decided to devote an entire net to her. This will be the first time a lot of hams will have a chance to speak frankly to a female who isn’t a relation, so feel free to check in. She will be answering all sorts of questions regarding women, the Karynstatus of Ham Radio in the ‘geek’ range, etc. She is a 100% cool, normal girl who has no exposure to nerdy hobbies like Ham Radio, etc. so expect her to be honest and frank.

For those who want to listen but aren’t hams or can’t get access to either Echolink or IRLP, There are two internet streaming options: Terry VE3NSV’s stream at http://ve3nsv.no-ip.org:8000/hamsexy.m3u, as well, the WARP Radio Network interrupts their local broadcasting to carry the net live: http://www.warp-radio.com.

Net control will be Bryan VE3HBD in Toronto. All hams from across the globe are welcome to check in! We take check-ins promptly at nine.

The Hamsexy HF Net

The Hamsexy HF Net
The test net on Sunday was, in my humble opinion, very successful. You had very short notice – about a day. Conditions were rough, people were fading in and out. Even still, we were able to log more check-ins than we did during the previous net on 40 meters. Perhaps next time the propagation gods will bless us with better conditions. We even had a couple of guys who had never even heard of Hamesexy and hopefully they have checked out the web site since then.

Broadcasters (some of them seasonal) are kicking our *hams* on 40 meters in the evening hours. Therefore, the hamsexy.com HF net will NOT be held tonight. We will hold the net again on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1800 UTC (1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific) on 14.320 MHz (+/- 10 kHz – if there is a QSO or someone calling “CQ contest…. CQ contest” on that frequency). If there is too much interference due to the ARRL contest this weekend, we may just move over to 17 meters so keep an eye on this page in case we have to make last-minute changes.

I am only one station, and as your humble net control, I cannot do this all on my own. My signal will never reach everyone, everywhere. I’m not running legal limit here. If you and I have a good signal path (you know who you are) you may be asked to relay and take check-ins. If you cannot hear me, but you hear others, please ask for someone to relay for you. This is a team effort, and so far, the HF net is off to a very good start after only 2 runs.

So there you go. Unless you don’t yet have HF, for lack of a better phrase…. BE THERE!

Help map Hamsexy!!

Thanks to Matt K5MLK, we’ve been pointed in the direction of a pretty cool website called FRAPPR. It’s an online mapping utility that allows visitors to plot where they are visiting the site from.

So, take a moment and visit http://www.frappr.com/hamsexy and plot yourself on the map! It’s easy and you don’t need to join. Just put your name, your zip code/city and a message, and it’ll automatically plot you anywhere in the world. It’s a cool way of visually seeing the international impact of Hamsexy.

Plot away!!

Hamsexy Net Map – updated!

NetmapAfter a few months of screwing around, I’ve finally gotten around to updating the Hamsexy Net chcek-in map. I have included checkins from both the VOIP and HF nets.

Missing, for now, are our check-ins from outside of North America. They include Scotland, England and Australia. I will work on a world map later on.

Feel free to take a look at let me know if there are any glaring omissions, mistakes. Remember it’s not 100% accurate, so don’t come whining that I’m a few miles off from where the exact area your town is in… As long as it’s in the ballpark, it’s fine!!

For scale’s sake, I wasn’t able to add a lot of the suburbs of cities who checked in (for example, if you checked in from a suburb of Chicago, I didn’t bother putting the suburb in.. just CHICAGO).

Lest we Forget

OmahalandingToday is November 11th – Veteran’s Day in the USA and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s the day that we all take a few moments on the 11th hour to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of the freedom we enjoy every day. it’s that freedom that allows us to live our lives in wonderful and glorious democracy, and that freedom that allows sites such as Hamsexy to exist (and the right to be able to visit it).

We count members of the armed forces as members and friends of the Hamsexy family, both past and present. Take a moment today to speak to either an active member of the military or a veteran of a foreign war, and you’ll greater appreciate the price that we pay every day for freedom. Take special effort to speak to those who served in the Second World War – their insight, wisdom and experiences will give you an understanding of the evolution of our freedom, and open up a past that so Vetkneelsuscemeterymany of us today know very little about, and appreciate even less.

To those who have served and died in previous wars, and those who are serving today in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Haiti, we here at Hamsexy honor you and the sacrifice you and your families make ensuring the banner of freedom continues to fly. God bless and protect all of you.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
