Laughing at REACT again

Our friend HiddenHam referred us to a rather funny thread on eLightbars.org. Always a great source of comedic gold (nestled among an otherwise good forum), we of course pounced on this like a Ham on … well, a ham.

The thread starts out with a guy named bisho1p, who proves to out-whack the whackers:

  • “I use my lights and my airhorn sparingly to get to an accident scene so that I can set up cones, flares, redirect traffic , or whatever needs to be done. I dont roll through town with lights flashing or anything like that. I drive with a sense of urgency, but I dont drive with my lights on, nor do I race through traffic.

I turn on my lights when I am close enough that I will not have to go through any more traffic lights to reach the scene. This establishes that I am responding to the scene, but doesnt make me look like a frivolous wacker or a hinderance to traffic.

Yes, I will go up on the median if all other possibilities of expeditiously reaching the scene have been exhausted. I have even gone into the lane of oncoming traffic because it was a two lane road in each direction, and no emergency personnel were on scene, and vehicles were overturned. I drove at about 5 mph, and yes, I used the air horn almost continuously in a rapid blasting type-tone. I was careful, and came to a stop if a car was approaching, to be sure the car was yielding to me. I have done this only 3 times in the past year. And it was because I was first on scene, and traffic was really backed up.

Now, this bisho1p guy seems like an intersting character. A quick search on Google confirms our suspicions that he’s an annoying cop wannabe, who thinks that being a member of REACT grants him special rights (like operating pre-emption systems, running red lights, driving dangerously, etc.) We found this post on realpolice.net, where he makes a pest of himself to local cops. There’s also this thread, that proves that he’s trying to buy a DIY infrared pre-emption kit.

He also like posting and joining EMT, police and emergency services forums – a sure sign of a whacker.

Here’s an artist’s rendering of bisho1p’s whacker mobile: notice the lights and antenna. It would also be running a red light if it were real (drawn by Andy L.):

Thanks for the great submission. We love pointing and laughing at the whackers. Remember, if you’ve got anything to add to this conversation, or to tell me what a jerk I am for making fun of this guy. leave a comment! Whack the whacker!!

More Canadian Hamsexy

We had yet ANOTHER submission from the infamous St. Catharines Hamfest in Canada. I think this sets a record as the largest non-Dayton submission frenzy we’ve ever had with a hamfest.

Alright… What have we got today…. A Volkswagon Golf with a terrible antenna. In the first photo we see how ridiculously tall the antenna is on this thing. In the second photo we see what’s holding this antenna to the car. I’ll give him props that it’s actually welded and not duct taped or tied to the car. On the last photo we see a tie-wrapped bumper and a padlocked hatchback. Classy hoopty.

Richmond Frostfest

Got a report from one of our Hamsexy correspondants down in the heart of Dixie, who got this great photo of a van at the Richmond Frostfest in Virginia. The tiny “Emergency Communications” magnetic decal on the ride and the wicked-bad “Storm tracker” decal on the back window are hamsexy enough, but man… what’s with the airhorn? There are two possibilities… Either he put them up there because I guess he thinks it looks cool, or he actually went to the time, trouble, effort and expense of installing a compressor and the plumbing in order to make the air horn work. What does he want to do? Scare the tornado away with his noise? The only thing missing is the requisite lightbar, but who knows what he has sitting on his dashboard.

Hamsexy – California Style!

Hey now! Welcome to my first post on the new system! Sweet.

Alright.. we got a letter the other day from Josh KD6KML and Dan N6TKW, who were at the Livermore Swap Meet in Livermore California. Here’s what they wrote us:

Here’s some Hamsexy Stuff – California Style!

The green Ford features 5 antennas in addition to the standard broadcast antenna. Three are mounted in the rusty roof, one  in the center, and the other two off to the sides towards the back. On the rear window, on each side are some sort of glass mount units. The whips on these are just inches away from the roof mounted antennas. Also, be sure to note the amber lightbar, junk on the dashboard, crack that extends across the windshield, and best of all the license plate.

This mag mount is ready for some heavy duty work, but all is not well. Apparently, it needed a better ground. That’s what the “monster cable” speaker wire wrapped around the mount and leading foreward is for. It ends at a 1/4″ Allen head bolt the passes through the roof of this otherwise normal car. I guess it’s no good to drill a hole to mount an antenna, but it’s OK to make a hole for a ground wire to be bolted to the roof.

And finally, the white Hyundai. I think the antenna is longer than the car is, and this is without the whip that was inside the car (no pix per the rules here). I think there were 8 magnets on this mount. If the big HF antenna was not enough there are the other 3 mag mounts placed randomally on the car’s roof. Who knows what the setup o nthe side of the car is for….

We stood out in the crowd, being we had shaved and showered in the recent past, unlike the vast majority there.
