A view from our Hobby…

Jan KG6SUL sent us this clipping, which appeared as an Op-Ed piece from the Fresno Bee.

Computers aren’t worth the hassle or intrusion – 12/22/06

From articles in The Bee, there are more bad things than good things about computers and the Internet. Spam, junk mail, e-mail and also the child molesters. As an active ham radio operator, I know there are many operators who have wired in their computers to send Morse code taking away the fun of doing the job as it was intended — by hand.

There is also image spam, in which the advertisement is part of the picture. Just plain gobbledy-goop.

For my part, I will not have a computer in my house. I am not afraid of temptation to use it for illegal purposes, but it seems as though any new concept attracts the riff-raff of our generation. Thanks, but no thanks.

More of the “Get off my lawn” mindset that seems to be rampant in our fair hobby.

Like a pendulum of doom swinging back at us, it is again Wednesday and again time for the Hamsexy Net!! Not only is it the Holiday Season and I am sure some you slackers are out finishing up your shopping, but tonight I think it almost requires that we talk about the gift we got from the FCC. CODE EXAM IS GONE!! So we’ll discuss that and the “Hamsexy Elmering Challenge”.
As always the Warp Radio Network will be here to simulcast the net for anyone that cannot get onto Echolink or onto an IRLP Node.
So be sure to check into IRLP Node 9008 or Echolink Conference *VAN-IRLP* at 2100 hours this evening and make sure your voice is heard by all.

We had a great turnout with some great commentary regarding the Code Test and eliminating it. I edited it above, but also my apologies to Tom, I mis-spoke above, and it wasn’t to be a slight against supporters. This was the best turn out that I have ever had while at Net Control, and I want to thank everyone for comin out and getting involved. Happy Holidays to all, and Happy New Year!!73, K2JSV

OF gets shot down by FCC

FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION
Enforcement Bureau
Spectrum Enforcement Division
1270 Fairfield Road
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325-7245

November 7, 2006

John C. Wait
333 Louisiana Avenue
Oak Ridge, TN 37830

SUBJECT: DISMISSAL OF COMPLAINT AGAINST VEC

Dear Mr. Wait:

On August 19, 2006, you filed a complaint against the W4VEC Volunteer Examiner Coordinator concerning an examination session on August 18, 2006. You alleged that an applicant, whom you were unable to name, was allowed to test without sufficient identification and that when you objected, you were threatened and asked to step outside the examination room.

Information submitted to the Enforcement Bureau in response to your complaint indicates that the applicant was too young to have a driver’s license, but had a learner’s permit and other forms of identification; that he was known by the other VE; and that he was accompanied by his uncle, a well-known Amateur Radio licensee who vouched for his identity. The information submitted also indicates that you had to be ejected from the examination building and that, as a result of this incident, you have been disqualified as VE.

Your complaint is dismissed as frivolous. Furthermore, it is unfortunate that the limited resources of the Enforcement Bureau had to be used to evaluate your allegations.

Thanks to Doownek on the Hamsexy Forums for bringing this to our attention, and thanks to N5KSK for  doing the legwork and determining that this old fart was http://www.qrz.com/callsign/W4LNX (complete with photo)

Richard on the forums summed it up: I especially like the end: “Thanks for wasting our fucking time.”

… — .-.. — -. –. ..-. ..- -.-. -.- . .-. …

breakingnews.jpgThis just in from the Hamsexy newsticker – the rumors are true, Morse Code is going bye bye for American amateurs. This is all posted in a news release from the FCC. Obviously, this news has spread across the world of amateur radio like wildfire, as code/no-code debates are among the most venomous and most annoying debates on any ham radio forum.

FCC MODIFIES AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE RULES, ELIMINATING MORSE CODE EXAM REQUIREMENTS AND ADDRESSING ARRL PETITION FOR RECONSIDERATION

morse1.jpgWashington, D.C. – Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a Report and Order and Order on Reconsideration (Order) that modifies the rules for the Amateur Radio Service by revising the examination requirements for obtaining a General Class or Amateur Extra Class amateur radio operator license and revising the operating privileges for Technician Class licensees. In addition, the Order resolves a petition filed by the American Radio Relay League, Inc. (ARRL) for partial reconsideration of an FCC Order on amateur service rules released on October 10, 2006.

“Finally, today’s Order resolved a petition filed by the ARRL for partial reconsideration of
an FCC Order released on October 10, 2006 (FCC 06-149). In this Order, the FCC authorized amateur stations to transmit voice communications on additional frequencies in certain amateur service bands, including the 75 meter (m) band, which is authorized only for certain wideband voice and image communications. The ARRL argued that the 75 m band should not have been expanded below 3635 kHz, in order to protect automatically controlled digital stations operating in the 3620-3635 kHz portion of the 80 m band. The FCC concluded that these stations can be protected by providing alternate spectrum in the 3585-3600 kHz frequency segment. Action by the Commission on December 15, 2006, by Report and Order and Order on Reconsideration.

Hamsexy net 12-13-2006

Hamsexy netAnd another net is in the history books.
The topic for tonight’s net, courtesy of Carl KC2LLT, was: “How far is too far? The severity of uber-whackers in today’s society.” How many antennas can one have on their vehicle before they are assumed to be insane? Is an amber lightbar ever acceptable to have on something that isn’t a tow truck, snow plow or similar vehicle? Is there any good reason to own a reflective vest that says “emergency communications” on the back?

We had 7 checkins from across North America:

N8FQ Joe (net control)
KE4NOY Matt
KC0RBC Hambone
WB4ZCP Steve
KC2LLT Carl
VE6PWT Robert
W8JUZ Laura
KD8CPP Tyler

The net began when Matt notified me that we were live on WARP at 9:01 PM, and ended after all comments had been noted at 9:19 PM. Net control next week will be James K2JSV, so you all have that to look forward to.

2006 Hamsexy Toronto Meet

The 4th annual Hamsexy Toronto meet has come and gone, with lots of fun being had by all.

The attendees included Hamsexy friends from across Canada and the US, enjoying some fine food, AstroSexyness, pool and the ladies at the Million Dollar Gentleman’s Club near Toronto Airport.

This trip also welcomed a few members of our brood into the $160 dollar club…. if you’re not sure what that means, well…. you’ll have to ask them because I don’t want to break the code of the Strip Club.
